Structural Analysis of Wet Electrostatic Precipitator

Published Date:2026-10-0815 Views

A Wet Electrostatic Precipitator is mainly composed of a shell, gas distribution system, electrode system, flushing system, insulation system, and high-voltage power supply. Its structure is designed to keep stable performance under wet, corrosive, and saturated flue gas conditions.

Shell and Gas Distribution System

The shell houses the internal components and protects them from external environmental influence. It is usually made from corrosion-resistant steel, stainless steel, FRP, or steel with internal lining. The gas distribution system, including inlet ducts, baffles, and flow straighteners, ensures uniform flue gas velocity across the collection field. Uniform gas distribution helps reduce local overloading and improves collection efficiency.

Electrode System

The electrode system is the core of a WESP. It includes the collecting electrodes and discharge electrodes.

Collecting electrodes

Also called anodes, they capture charged particles. Common forms include plate-type, tubular, and honeycomb structures. Honeycomb or tubular designs are often used in vertical WESPs because they provide a compact layout and high surface area.

Discharge electrodes

Also called cathodes or corona electrodes, they generate corona discharge under high voltage. They are usually suspended in the center of collecting tubes or between collecting plates. Materials are selected for corrosion resistance and mechanical stability.

Flushing and Drainage System

Instead of mechanical rapping, a WESP uses water to clean the collecting surfaces. The flushing system typically includes spray headers, nozzles, pumps, piping, and valves. Water forms a continuous or intermittent film on the collecting electrodes, washing captured dust, mist, and aerosols into a drainage sump. This wet cleaning method helps prevent secondary dust release and reduces the risk of electrode blockage.

Insulation and High-Voltage System

The high-voltage power supply provides stable DC voltage to maintain corona discharge. Insulators support the discharge electrodes while keeping them electrically isolated from the grounded shell. Because WESPs operate in wet environments, insulation boxes are often equipped with heating, air purging, or sealing measures to avoid condensation, tracking, and insulation failure.

Design Considerations

  • Vertical or horizontal layout depending on site space and process requirements

  • Material selection based on flue gas composition, moisture, and corrosion risk

  • Electrode geometry matched with gas velocity and voltage level

  • Flushing frequency optimized to maintain a stable water film without excessive water consumption

  • Maintenance access arranged for inspection, nozzle cleaning, and electrode replacement

This modular structure allows WESP systems to be adapted to different flue gas volumes, emission targets, and installation conditions. For detailed drawings, material options, or technical specifications, please contact our engineering team.
